Blame Us - Voivod. Exceptional band. Terrible singer. They would have been much better as an instrumental outfit. The "heartfelt" warbling and inflection just accentuate the nasally mediocrity of the dude's voice. (I really hope the singer isn't the guy from Voivod that died. I'd feel terrible) Other than that complaint, Voivod could have been the greatest band ever.
Rabbit In Your Headlights - UNKLE. When Radiohead is as broad reaching as they are, there is no reason…

The Conversation - The Twilight Singers. For the most part, Powder Burns gets on my nerves. Lots of cliched catch phrases from a seemingly uninspired lyricist. However, two songs on that album have damn near captured mastery. Bonnie Brae and The Conversation do it right. There's not much musical going on here but the lyrics and tone are superbly sinister. The "Three Can Keep A Secret" lyric is up there as one of the most evil/eerie ever and a real punch to the gut. This is poetry for…

2113 - Coheed & Cambria. What is this, the year after Rush's 2112 or sumtin'? The song is way too long, even for C&C. The first metal break isn't until 3 minutes in. It's good enough but needs some aggressive editing to make it great.
If You Have To Ask - Red Hot Chili Peppers. It goes against the grain, but this is one of my favorite RHCP songs. The Kiedis rap isn't so shitty and the funk is pretty damn good.
Hated - The Afghan Whigs. When I put…

Time In A Bottle - Jim Croce. Jim Croce is a rotten son of a bitch, a weepy Nancy and saccharine crooner. I wish I didn't love his music so much. Jim Croce's music makes me a weepy Nancy and that's why he's a son of a bitch.
Master Of Fists - High On Fire. A master of fists is either a true bad ass or a complete pervert. Been really enjoying this sludgy kind of Sabbath inspired metal lately. I'm definitely going to expand my High On Fire collection soon. Might go to the…

The Threat - Skid Row. Youngsters today are being shortchanged by not having this kind of aggressive, hard edged rock available for mass consumption. Sure, they can get Skid Row and the like on demand but the means for mass consumption just doesn't exist. Popular music doesn't exist, just little pockets of specialized culture that rarely intermingle. A black kid will never be introduced to Metallica by the weirdo quiet kid and the jock will never have an NWA CD slipped to them in the…

A Heavy Abacus - The Joy Formidable. I haven't spent nearly as much time listening to this band as I should. They're easily my favorite new band of the last couple of years. The girl's voice is fantastic and they rock hard.
Justice In Murder - Coheed & Cambria. They're the contemporary bastard son of Iron Maiden and Rush. Definitely one of my all time favorites now that they've been around for so long. Great showmen as well. I will absolutely see them again if they…

Behold A Lady - Outkast. This is straight up art. Andre 2000 is just as talented as Prince or James Hetfield or Bruce Springsteen or any number of musical geniuses. Dude is a treasure. I hope for a new Outkast album almost every day.
Brena - A Perfect Circle. A Perfect Circle is a great band but they'll never top or even come close to the dominance of 3 Libras. This song is only adequate in the wake of 3 Libra's greatness.
Walkabout - Red Hot Chili…

Good Morning Captain - The Black Crowes. Another new one to me. Picked up this at the used place a couple of weeks ago. Somebody has some damn fine taste and just happened to really need $0.40. The bonus download code in the case was still active too. This is more old school country than southern rock. It's phenomenal.
Every Man And Woman Is A Star - The Cult. We're actually just made of star stuff, Ian. To be stars we would have to be so massive to cause a nuclear…

Ghetto Defendant - The Clash. You know what? This song is terrible. Yeah I said it. The Clash isn't immune to criticism. The monotone fella injecting a random comment is ridiculous. The occasional frenzied drum beat has no purpose. There might as well be a funky slap and pop bass solo to complete the ludicrousness of this song.
Don't Forget Me - Red Hot Chili Peppers. RHCP gets to be tiresome but this song remains interesting. It's slow but not a ballad. Anthony…

Time Consumer - Coheed & Cambria. I don't know what to think of this one. It starts out too smooth. Luckily it develops into a more aggressive kinda song, more C&C appropriate. You can hear how much Claudio developed in later releases, especially Year Of The Black Rainbow.
Dead To Rights - The Twilight Singers. Powder Burns was more than a little disappointing. Thankfully Dulli cleaned up, quit smoking, lost some weight and got The Afghan Whigs back together.…

Seven Cities Of Gold - Rush. Kickin' things of correctly with a six and a half minute Rush song! This new album is beyond fantastic. They sound energized, almost youthful. It's ambitious and hard. I'd never in a million years expect a bunch of dudes in their late fifties could produce such a great, vibrant album. Great convergence of craft and art.
Look Out Below - Ratt. It's one of the lesser songs on Infestation. Don't know what it is, but I'm feeling a twinge of…

Canto 34 - Five Finger Death Punch. Just read that a few dudes in this band played with WASP at one point. You can kinda hear the influence in some of their songs. This one, conversely, sounds like a Dokken/Metallica/Godsmack mash-up instrumental. There are worse things to mash together.
Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore - The Mars Volta. I smell pot. I'm alone in the house and I don't smoke marijuana. The nearest neighbor is several hundred feet away. She's…

Ceremony - The Cult. The intro is unnecessary and too long. After a minute the good stuff kicks in. Definitely a Cult song. A good The Cult song at that.
Hypersonic - Jane's Addiction. Very close to capturing the spirit of Ritual. The title of the song is a bit uninspired though. Cheesydoodles.
Sucker - Peeping Tom Feat. Norah Jones. How 'bout a hell yes? Hell yes! Norah curses up a blue streak. It's sexy hearing filth from a normal, middle of the…

Sad - Pearl Jam. One of the better songs on Lost Dogs. Decently flushed out yet experimental and raw. Quite the rocker.
Tearjerker - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Disgustingly terrible. Vile. Tearjerker? More like rage maker.
Burn - W.A.S.P. Damn right, this is more like it. That last album, Babylon, is a supreme rocker. This song will regale you with rollicking rock radness. Alliteration!
World To Come - Gorjira. Got nothing to say, man.…

Caffeine - Faith No More. Martin's guitar work definitely sounds dated on this track. The band absolutely did the right thing in parting ways with him. The progression of sound on the next two albums is immense. That's not to say this isn't full on awesome, because it is.
Spanish Doors - The Gutter Twins. This is my absolute favorite Gutter Twins song. Well maybe. We Have Met Before is up there too. I kinda consider them to be the same song as they pair up…

Naked Burn - Mastodon. I'm at the point in my appreciation of Mastodon that I'd be excited to see them live. Don't have all of the albums just yet but the two that I have are magnificent regulars in the lineup. Spotify has filled the gaps too. They're fast becoming one of my ATFs, still playing catch up to Coheed & Cambria though.
Piece Of Me - Skid Row. I sincerely believe I could beat up Sebastian Bach. Sure, he's tall and potentially super fast but he's also…
