Mute Departure - Cult Of Luna. Dreaming of your perfect atmospheric progressive black death metal album? Vertikal is better than that. I'm 100% surprised by how much I like this. This song is a great combination of heavy, not so heavy, odd instrumentation, melody, virtuosity, and the understated.
Knock Me Down - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Alex Winter was in the video for this song. I didn't have to look up that little tidbit because I was a hardcore Pepperhead for a while. Knock Me Down is my favorite pre-Rubin RHCP song. Much better than most of that George Clinton produced bullshit. Keidis needed to be knocked on his ass several times in the ensuing years.
Little Thing - Jimmy Eat World. Jimmy really needs to lay off the emo and concentrate on the rock. Also, this sounds way too much like a Cold Play song for my liking. Emo Cold Play at that. Jimmy is crafty though. He does rock well enough to ensure that I will continue to buy his albums. Jerk.
Soul Music - Curtis Mayfield. Mayfield has a solid, solid falsetto. Usher aint got shit on my man. I'd tell it to his smug face if given that chance. Curtis Mayfield > Usher. Always and forever. I know I'm want to throw around superlatives but this may be the best soul song.
Cumbria Sobre el Rio (suena) - Celso Pina. Bunch of hybrid ranchero La Bamba bullshit. Christ, now they're rapping. I bet they wear those ridiculous curl-toed cowboy boots and plate sized belt buckles. SXSW is happy shining a spotlight on awfulness.
